Understanding the ACCUPLACER Placement Test
ACCUPLACER Ability to Benefit tests allow postsecondary test takers without a high school diploma or its equivalent to receive Title IV financial aid when they are enrolled in eligible programs. The Ability to Benefit test includes reading, writing, and math.
Note: This exam does not satisfy TSI requirements. The TSIA 2.0 is required to satisfy TSI requirements.
Huntsville Campus
- Remote Test Option: ATB tests can be taken at another ATB-approved site only. Examinees should inquire with the SHSU Testing Center by email (test.ctr@shsu.edu) or phone (936-294-1025) to verify if an ATB-approved test site is in their vicinity.
- In-Person Option: Click here for available test dates and times.
- Report time: Report to the testing site at least 15-30 minutes before your scheduled testing time.
- Exam length: Ability to Benefit tests are untimed, but take approximately 1.5-2 hours to complete
ACCUPLACER Testing Fees:
First attempt: $53.50
Retests:
- 1 subject: $18.50
- 2 subjects: $33.50
- Full exam: $53.50
Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
ACCUPLACER Test Day Requirements:
- Arrive 15 minutes before your exam.
- Bring a valid photo ID (driver’s license, passport, military ID, student ID) and a secondary ID (library card, credit/debit card).
- Also bring your SamID (or voucher number if you're not an SHSU student)
Accessing Scores and Retaking ACCUPLACER:
- Scores are available immediately after testing and via the ACCUPLACER Student Portal.
- RETAKES
- Students must wait 14 days from the most recent exam date to retake the Ability to Benefit tests in the same subject.
Requesting Testing Accommodations:

The Testing Center must receive documentation of your accommodation at least two weeks in advance of your scheduled test date.
