SHREC Sports Medicine Fellowship
Welcome to a community-based, university-backed fellowship through the Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium (SHREC), with support from Sam Houston State University (SHSU).
This program is dedicated to preparing outstanding sports medicine physicians through rotations with diverse specialists, broad athletic coverage, and mentorship that equips fellows to serve communities with compassion and excellence. Our mission reflects SHSU's motto, "The measure of a Life is its Service."
Located just 70 miles north of Houston, Huntsville offers small-town living, a vibrant community, and access to big-city amenities.
Director's Welcome
Thank you for your interest in the Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium Fellowship (ACGME Program Code: 1274812003; NRMP Program Code: TBD). This program has been granted ACGME Initial Accreditation as of May 29, 2025.
In short, this program aims to train physicians to become outstanding sports medicine physicians, no matter what setting they may practice in the future. Fellows will rotate through multiple different practices with different specialists, showcasing the wide variety of the application of Sports Medicine for athletes of all ages and levels. SHREC Sports Medicine Fellowship also seeks to equip our fellows with the skills needed to treat diverse patient populations as they become independent practicing physicians and leaders in their communities. This goal aligns with the mission of Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the motto of SHSU, “The measure of a Life is its service.”
Huntsville Memorial Hospital is a Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ)-accredited, not-for-profit 98-bed acute care community hospital delivering high-quality medical care to the residents of Walker County and its surrounding communities since 1927. The HMH Rural Health Clinic, HMH Family Medicine Residency Clinic, HMH Orthopedic Clinic, HMH Center for Rehabilitation, and Sports Medicine all share a suite of offices, allowing patients to have access to multiple disciplines under one roof. It also has an in-house laboratory, x-ray, and ultrasound for diagnosis and guidance during procedures.
Fellows will also serve as assistant team physicians for Sam Houston's 16 NCAA Division I sports, local high schools, and other athletic competitions.

- Community and Event Coverage: Participate in athletic coverage opportunities such as the Chevron Houston Marathon, Aramco Houston Half Marathon, and We Are Houston 5K, with additional electives in rodeo medicine and regional sporting events as available.
- Small Cohort Mentorship: Work closely with experienced faculty physicians and athletic trainers in a supportive, personalized learning environment with only two fellows per year.
- Academic Integration: Engage in SHSU-COM didactics, Journal Club, ultrasound workshops, and case presentations to strengthen diagnostic and procedural skills.
HANDS-ON CURRICULUM & TRAINING
Fellows rotate between rural and suburban clinics to gain experience treating a wide variety of athletes and active patients while maintaining practice in their primary specialty from residency. A weekly half-day continuity clinic at the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Rural Health Clinic ensures ongoing exposure to family medicine practice and long-term patient care.
Weekly didactic sessions include lectures from teaching faculty, musculoskeletal ultrasound practice, and journal discussions focused on clinical application and current sports medicine research. Fellows also present musculoskeletal topics and clinical cases to the SHREC/HMH Family Medicine Residency, fostering collaboration across programs.
WHERE THIS Fellowship LEADS
Graduates of the SHREC Sports Medicine Fellowship are prepared for board certification in sports medicine and careers in academic medicine, primary care sports medicine, or leadership roles in athletic and community health programs. Fellows complete the program with the clinical confidence and procedural expertise to care for athletes and active individuals at every level of competition.

Located in the Piney Woods region of East Texas, Huntsville offers the ideal balance of small-town charm, outdoor recreation, and access to metropolitan amenities. The city is approximately 70 miles north of Houston and home to Sam Houston State University’s main campus, creating a vibrant academic and athletic environment.
Campus & Recreation: Fellows enjoy access to SHSU’s recreation center, which includes a rock-climbing wall, swimming pool, basketball courts, and fitness classes. The Lowman Student Center offers a bowling alley, game room, and several dining options.
Outdoor Lifestyle: The nearby Huntsville State Park and Sam Houston National Forest feature extensive hiking and biking trails, while Lake Raven, Lake Conroe, and Lake Livingston provide opportunities for fishing and boating.
Dining & Community: Huntsville features a variety of locally owned restaurants such as The Café Texan, Humphrey’s, and Carbonero, along with food trucks at Arnaud’s Food Truck Park. The area is family-friendly, with local parks, a splash pad, daycare centers, and community churches.
