Residencies That Make a Difference

Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) supports Graduate Medical Education (GME) through the Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium (SHREC). SHREC offers ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs focused on improving access to care across East Texas. As a resident or fellow, you'll gain hands-on experience serving diverse patient populations, while learning from dedicated faculty and clinical teams.

Whether you’re starting your residency, exploring post-DO training options, or part of a hospital or clinic interested in partnering with SHSU-COM, our programs are designed to create a lasting impact for physicians, patients, and entire communities.

Why Train in Texas?

Where you train shapes how and where you practice medicine. Texas is more than just a training ground – it’s a place where your work can truly make a difference. With many communities underserved by the current healthcare system, our residency and fellowship programs give you the opportunity to practice meaningful medicine from day one. You will treat diverse patient populations, gain broad clinical exposure, and develop strong clinical judgement.

Physicians tend to stay within 100 miles of where they complete their residency. That means your training environment isn’t just a temporary stop; it’s the foundation of your future. Deciding where to complete your residency is not a small decision, and choosing to complete your residency here helps close critical care gaps in the region.

But this isn’t about workforce statistics – it’s about building relationships with patients who know your name, collaborating with teams who are deeply invested in community well-being, and shaping a career grounded in service and purpose.

You won’t just train here. You will belong here.
