OakBend Family Medicine Residency

SHSU-COM’s Family Medicine Residency at OakBend Medical Center in Richmond, Texas, prepares resident physicians to serve rural and underserved communities across Fort Bend County and surrounding areas. This three-year, university-sponsored, community-based program offers comprehensive, hands-on clinical training across a broad range of specialties, with an emphasis on patient-centered care, leadership development, and service to diverse populations. Residents train in small cohorts at OakBend Medical Center and affiliated OakBend Medical Group clinics, gaining experience in both suburban and rural practice settings through the Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium (SHREC).

Dear Future Family Physician,

Greetings! It is so wonderful that you are interested in our Sam Houston Regional Education Consortium (SHREC) OakBend Family Medicine Residency Program (ACGME: 1204800014; NRMP: 2291120C1). Our mission here in Richmond, Texas, is to train future family medicine physicians in rural and underserved areas of Texas with a focus on Fort Bend County and surrounding rural areas. Our goal here is to help prepare you for any direction that you wish to proceed after completion of your program.

Here at OakBend Medical Group, we have three no-wait emergency rooms, 247 hospital beds, three surgery centers, 21 physical therapy clinics, we are CAP accredited, and are a not-for-profit hospital. We are a university-sponsored, community-based program that specializes in comprehensive training which includes a broad range of rotations over your next three years in a small class size of only four residents each year.

I feel no greater sense of pride than being the Program Director for this residency program. We hope to meet each of you soon and I look forward to helping teach you over the next three years.

HANDS-ON CURRICULUM & TRAINING

Residents complete a diverse range of rotations primarily at OakBend Medical Center and the adjacent OakBend Medical Group clinic, with additional training opportunities at nearby hospitals and clinics in the Richmond area. This structure provides broad exposure to family medicine across both suburban and rural patient populations.

Weekly didactic sessions are typically held on Friday afternoons and include case discussions, procedure workshops, and presentations led by residency faculty and SHSU-COM educators. The program integrates the DeckerMed Family Medicine Weekly Curriculum™, an online learning platform aligned with the ABFM Certification Exam Blueprint, to reinforce clinical knowledge and board preparation.

Residents also participate in Journal Club throughout the year and are encouraged to serve on hospital committees to expand their understanding of hospital operations and interdisciplinary care.

Graduates of the SHREC/OakBend Family Medicine Residency are well-prepared for independent practice, fellowship training, or leadership roles in community and academic medicine. The program’s emphasis on continuity care, evidence-based practice, and service to medically underserved populations equips residents to deliver high-quality, compassionate care throughout their careers.

Located in historic Fort Bend County, just southwest of Houston, Richmond offers the perfect balance of small-town charm and urban convenience. The area features affordable housing, short commutes, excellent schools, and a welcoming community. Residents enjoy local farmer’s markets, restaurants, fitness centers, and outdoor recreation at Brazos Bend State Park.
